VMware is close to having a complete product, so I will stick with them. Parallels Desktop is a bit more polished than VMware Fusion, but I used VMware Fusion for years on my Intel Macs and only switched to Parallels because they were first. To be fair, Parallels was the first mover in releasing commercial virtualization software on Apple Silicon and it shows. They refused, so I kindly told them where they could stick their software. So, when my subscription was due for renewal, I kindly asked Parallels to convert my license from subscription to perpetual (they still sell perpetual licenses). The first 6 months after release was problematic, to be kind. I was suckered into buying a Parallels subscription last year. There likely are other limitation that I am forgetting. I have gotten around the shared clipboard part by running the VM minimized and connecting to it through Microsoft RDP app that can be downloaded from the App store.ĭynamic screen resolutions are not working. Linux VMs can use generic open-vm-tools however, VMware tools for Windows is missing some features like shared folders and clipboard. The current VMware Fusion preview has its own limitations. The Technical Review is free to use, but VMware Fusion Player should still be free for personal use when it is released - VMware Fusion Player – Personal Use License. It is not production yet, but should be by the end of the year. I currently am running Windows 11 and Debian Linux VMs in the VMware Fusion for Apple Silicon Technical Review release that can be downloaded for free. Microsoft is no longer developing Windows 10 for ARM, so installs are limited to Windows 11 only. Surprisingly, I was able to activate my Windows 11 Insider Edition with an unused Windows 7 license key, so I am not using my insider account. Only the Windows Insider edition, which is free with a free Microsoft account, can be installed since Microsoft offers no retail or system-builder licenses for Windows on ARM. Only Windows for ARM can be installed although, Windows for ARM has an x86 translation layer like Rosetta 2 for running 32- and 64-bit x86 programs. First, running Windows in virtual machines on Apple Silicon has some overall limitations.
